Performance Assessment of Gravel–Tire Chips Mixes as Drainage Layer Materials Using Real Active MSW Landfill Leachate

Abstract: Potential of clogging for rubber tire chips, gravel and their relative performance for transmitting high strength leachate when arranged in proportionate layers of relative thickness and in random state mixes of various percentage compared to the case of used alone were studied through column experiments. Comparative hydraulic performance of gravel and tire chips in their different combinations with percentage change (reduction) in COD, TSS, Ca-hardness and TDS concentration levels for the real active high str… Show more

“…The contaminants' decay rate results were also found to agree with the MRR and regression coefficient R 2 results. The low efficiency of the shredded tires compared to the other materials in TSS and TDS could be due to the tire materials' properties, which might not be fully utilized for such applications [52,53]. More research on the waste materials in the same field could be taken to further understand their behaviour.…”

“…Scrap tires offer several benefits when used in construction, including their low unit weight, effective drainage, excellent thermal insulation, high compressibility, and notable vibration-damping qualities [7,8]. These attributes have led to an increased adoption of rubber granules for various applications, such as subgrade and embankment materials, trench fill material [9,10], drainage layers in highways [11], vibration attenuation in railway tracks [12], asphalt rubber manufacture [13], and subgrade insulation in roads [14], among other uses. It is believed that scrap tires have minimal impact on soil and groundwater quality since they are manufactured using inert (non-reactive) substances.…”

“…Pneumatic materials, due to their characteristics such as high durability, low density, and low water absorption, can be used in many Civil Engineering applications, such as leachate drainage systems for landfills, drainage layers for roads, reinforcement and improvement of soil support capacity, absorption of vibrations from railway lines, among others (Edinçliler & Ayhan, 2010;Hazarika et al, 2010;Kaushik et al, 2015;Indraratna et al, 2018).…”
