Performance Assessment of Pump‐and‐Treat Systems

Abstract: Pump‐and‐treat (P&T) is a widely applied remedy for groundwater remediation at many types of sites for multiple types of contaminants. Decisions regarding major changes in the remediation approach are an important element of environmental remediation management for a site using P&T. While existing guidance documents provide information on design, operation, and optimization for P&T systems, these documents do not provide specific technical guidance to support remedy decisions regarding when to transition to a … Show more

“…pump and treat technology (P&T) and in situ remediation technology. For P&T (Truex et al 2017), contaminated groundwater is pumped out from the aquifer and then treated externally in a treatment building. Thus, all the surface water treatments such as adsorption, filtration, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can be utilized for groundwater remediation.…”

“…The reconstruction of the evolution of groundwater contamination status illustrates (1) the effects of pump-and-treat intervention over time, (2) the reduction of the total contaminant mass, and (3) a narrowing of the contaminant plume that progressively reaches an asymptotic trend (Truex et al 2017 ) (Fig. 3 ).…”

“…Among the physical extraction-based remediation techniques, the pump-and-treat is traditionally the most commonly used approach for treating contaminated groundwater (Brusseau 2019 ; Teramoto et al 2020 ). While the initial phase of pump-and-treat systems typically achieves a rapid reduction of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) aqueous concentrations, its long-term effectiveness diminishes, and the system often reaches asymptotic conditions (Truex et al 2017 ). Further operations of the system provide small incremental benefits in treating soil or groundwater contamination, often not achieving the regulation cleaning goals and being operationally long and expensive (Lari et al 2019b ).…”

“…Non di rado questi esercizi si prolungano per anni (Bonfà 2015) o più precisamente per decenni (Truex et al 2017), cosicché per adempiere agli obblighi qualitativi di legge ci si può esporre all'azzardo di un impoverimento quantitativo 17 addizionale dei serbatoi.…”
