Performance-based fractal fracture model for complex fracture network simulation

Abstract: The paper presents a novel hydraulic fracturing model for the characterization and simulation of the complex fracture network in shale gas reservoirs. We go beyond the existing method that uses planar or orthogonal conjugate fractures for representing the ''complexity'' of the network. Bifurcation of fractures is performed utilizing the Lindenmayer system based on fractal geometry to describe the fracture propagation pattern, density and network connectivity. Four controlling parameters are proposed to describ… Show more

“…Early faults affect the subsequent development of new faults, and the pattern of later-forming faults reflects the distribution of earlier faults. Faults at different scales that develop during different time periods have a statistically significant similarity (Hirata 1989;Sarp 2014;Wang et al 2018). In the Jinhu Sag, we statistically analyzed 826 faults at different scales, including the sagcontrolling large fault and associated secondary faults.…”

“…With additional flow regions, composite heterogeneous reservoirs that are partially penetrated by fractures in vertical and horizontal directions and fracture damage can be addressed. By characterizing unconventional reservoirs with the fractal theory, alternative linear flow idealization formulas were proposed (Ozcan et al 2014;Wang et al 2015Wang et al , 2018Zeng et al 2020). Although they are applicable for interpreting pressure and rate responses, their reliability is heavily dependent on the fractal properties they choose.…”
