Performance characterization of PON technologies

Abstract: The simulation models for a typical PON layout are developed and three major PON technologies are considered. The models support the analysis of various important characteristic parameters, namely: 1) link budget for acceptable losses from splices, attenuation and splitters, 2) link performance characterization based on data (BER, SNR) or video signal quality, and 3) linear and nonlinear fiber effects such as dispersion, PMD, self-and cross-modulation, FWM, etc. Analysis outcomes may be used to optimize the pe… Show more

“…By P2P connection, one or two fiber cores are connected from the central office (CO) to the subscriber's location directly. P2MP connection requires a core of fiber to the splitter that splits the core to the splitting ratio of the splitter in one of the ratios; 1:16, 1:32, or 1:64 splitters, thereby maximizing the fiber optic utility [15]. P2P technology can be passive or active while P2MP is basically passive and is referred to as passive optical network (PON).…”

“…En la Fig. 8 se muestra la trama Downstream [20]. En modo Upstream, la transmisión es realizada utilizando un protocolo de acceso múltiple TDMA, en donde cada elemento tiene un periodo de tiempo específico para transmitir, permitiendo que un mismo canal de transmisión, en este caso la misma longitud de onda, sea compartido por varios usuarios.…”

“…From the great number of FTTH technologies mentioned above, for our investigation we have chosen the most popular one, which is based on the concept of using a passive fiber distribution network (known as PON). The FTTH employing PON access architecture is the accepted choice of the delivery channel for triple-play services (voice, video and data) from service providers to the home and business users worldwide [4].…”
