Internet broadband penetration has increased globally as a result of various fiber optic technologies employed.Nigeria fiber optic network is massive and very enterprising because the nation has great potentials in utilizing Internet broadband bandwidths as the largest Black Country in the world. The country presently has active submarine fiber optic cables connecting the country to the world through Europe with huge Internet broadband capacities. However, the Internet broadband penetration in the country is still very low with about 10% of the Oceanic Optical fiber capacities utilized and just 6% of fiber optic broadband penetration. This paper reviews the present state of fiber optics Internet broadband network penetration in Nigeria looking at the spread of fiber optic networks in the country, the application of the fiber optic technologies and the challenges of deploying fiber optic technologies for Internet broadband penetration in Nigeria. The paper classified the fiber optic network in Nigeria into the core, the backbone/backhaul and the access/last-mile fiber optic networks. The core fiber optic network is the oceanic fiber optic from Europe and Cameroun while the backbone fiber optic network is the fiber to the states and to central offices/ISPs. The access/last-mile fiber network is the fiber optic to the base transmission stations and the end users. It can be deduced from this paper that the last mile fiber optic network in the country is still very low and over 99% of the Internet penetration in the country is through the wireless mobile phones.

ResumenEn este artículo hace mención a las ventajas que posee el realizar transmisión de datos por medio de fibra óptica a través de GPON. Esta por ser una tecnología de última generación, ha permitido que servicios como televisión en alta definición, streaming y aplicaciones multimediales lleguen a los usuarios sin interferencias, ni retrasos marcados; también se pretenden dar a conocer las características de las tecnologías GPON que se están implementando en Colombia con el fin de poder brindar acceso a servicios convergentes. AbstractThis article mentions the advantages of carrying out data transmissions by fiber optics through GPON. Because fiber optics is a latest generation technology, it has allowed services such as high definition television, streaming and multimedia applications, to get to the users without interference, nor marked delays. This article is also aimed at raising awareness of the characteristics of GPON technologies, which are being implemented in Colombia with the purpose of providing access to converging services.

The paper presents an overview of widely accepted passive optical networks (PONs), and provides the results of comparative OPTSIM simulation for PON technological facilities involving optical layers, with the aim to reveal fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) technologic solutions. Traffic load is simulated over a PON optical layer using the OPNET Modeler to determine potential advantages and drawbacks of the proposed FTTx solution with PON elements in the access networks. The authors show that the optimal transmission speed for PON FTTx would lie in the range 1.25-5.0 Gbit/s with a standard PON architecture, which could be raised to 10 Gbit/s, however in this case we have to change the end user's equipment. In standards that specify the PON's functionality two distances: 10 km and 20 km are indicated. Our simulation shows that, after upgrading the receiver electrical filter, 10 Gbit/s transmissions over 40 km could be reached.
