Performance Evaluation of a Biological Pre-Treatment Coupled with the Down-Flow Expanded Granular Bed Reactor (DEGBR) for Treatment of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater

Abstract: Poultry slaughterhouse wastewater contains high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSSs), fats, oil and grease (FOG), proteins and carbohydrates. It is important that the wastewater is treated to acceptable environmental discharge standards. In this study, the poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW) was treated using two-stage processes consisting of a biological pre-treatment using a biodegrading agent (Eco-flushTM) coupled with a down-flow expanded granular bed reactor (D… Show more

“…The following operating variables were determined: applied volumetric load (AVL), feed flow (Q), hydraulic retention time (HRT), recirculation flow (Q R ), ascensional velocity (Vasc), and percentage of support medium. The effluent was filtered and screened before entering the reactor according to Dlamini et al (2021), due to its high concentration of solids such as feathers, bones, and skin pieces. The reactor operation was carried out in triplicate in each AVL to stabilize the system and was monitored daily to analyze its evolution.…”

“…The distribution of the removal efficiency values was more skewed and tailed for the TSS and the COD removal, and less skewed and tailed for FOG removal; overall, the DEGBR displayed a good performance for the removal of these contaminants, which were further removed in the post-treatment stage using an MBR. With reference to the reactor limitations and rationale mentioned in Table 2, the ob served DEGBR performance displayed an improved performance with no signs of clog ging nor need for backwashing [13,14,22] With reference to the reactor limitations and rationale mentioned in Table 2 served DEGBR performance displayed an improved performance with no signs ging nor need for backwashing [13,14,22]. With reference to the reactor limitations and rationale mentioned in Table 2, the observed DEGBR performance displayed an improved performance with no signs of clogging nor need for backwashing [13,14,22].…”
