Performance evaluation of column-SBR in paper and pulp wastewater treatment: optimization and bio-kinetics

Abstract: Pulp and paper industry generates effluent containing harmful compounds like chlorophenols which are difficult to biodegrade. It requires an appropriate treatment in order to meet the stringent discharge standards. In this work, a bench scale column type sequential batch reactor (SBR) was employed for treating pulp and paper wastewater. The performance of SBR, seeded with acclimatized sludge was optimized and analysed for maximizing COD and AOX removal. The process parameters viz; pH, initial COD, cycle time a… Show more

“…This is due to the fact that uncontrolled discharges of such wastewater occur in practice, which contributes to the penetration of hazardous pollutants into ground and underground aquifers. With that said, it should be summarized that the best way to manage HWWs is to ensure their local sorting into primary, secondary and tertiary (Khan et al, 2019a, b, c, d, e, f, g;Khana et al, 2019). Detailed information on silt disposal and possible water reuse, including the introduction of new and innovative techniques the HWW treatment, is also provided in this document.…”

“…The equilibrium constants (Kc) were calculated from those obtained by Langmuir model (KL) [45,46] using Equation 5, where ArPb is the atomic mass of lead (207.2 g mol - 1), [Pb +2 ] 0 is the standard concentration (1 mol L -1 ) and γ is the coefficient of activity that was considered equal to 1 because the measurements were made on dilute solutions [47,48].…”
