Performance evaluation of indices for transient stability

Abstract: In this paper the established performance indices for screening and ranking of power system contingencies are applied. The indices capture the change in the system state variables and deliver the degree to which it is provoked under different operating states. The indices refer to the generator coherency, transient energy conversion, dot products derived from the classical concept of the transient energy function, and generator angular deviation. The indices are calculated using the time domain simulation and … Show more

“…Xinlin Ye, Graduate Student Member, IEEE, and Jovica V. Milanović, Fellow, IEEE F mentioned above have been tested and compared in [11], considering various aspects including accuracy, execution speed, as well as the weights of the single indices in the composite index. It was validated there that these indices are efficient tools in ranking stage of online DSA screening, as they provided high capture ratio and short execution time.…”

“…Appropriately defined indices are therefore essential for accomplishing this task. They should be capable of reflecting the changes in the system variables as it transitions from the pre-to the post-fault contingency condition [11]. Similarly, the selecting stage defines the critical point between stable and unstable contingencies, which is usually achieved by using techniques such as data classification, data clustering, etc.…”

“…The contingencies, then, are ranked by their severity and can also be classified as stable or unstable based on the system response [22]. Various indices for DSA were proposed and analysed by [7,10,11,23] and some of those will be detailed in the next sections.…”

“…This evaluation can be performed by computing one or more performance indices (PIs), which are a relative measure of the contingency's severity to the system [1,7]. Various indices were studied in the literature, such as the ones related with transient stability [7][8][9][10][11], the ones related with frequency behaviour [12][13][14][15], and the ones related with voltage [16]. Some other works use different strategies involving fuzzy logic [13], risk quantification [17] and regression models [18].…”

“…Under this scenario, contingency screening methods become necessary as they can limit the computation time to an acceptable level when utilising online TSA. To satisfy the three key requirements of online TSA, i.e., accuracy, speed and scalability, the process can be segmented into two steps [1]: ranking and selection. One of the possible solutions to the ranking process is the use of power system stability indices calculated during the transient condition.…”
