Performance evaluation of LTE radio fingerprinting using field measurements

Abstract: This paper evaluates positioning accuracy of radio fingerprinting algorithm in commercially deployed LTE (Long Term Evolution) network operating on 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz frequency bands. Training database required for fingerprint positioning is constructed from field measurements that resemble LTE Release 10 Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) trace records. Performance is compared between LTE and LTE+WLAN grid-based RF fingerprint measurements utilizing partial fingerprint matching. Results indicate tha… Show more

“…Recently, the indoor and outdoor localization technology based on Base Station (BS) signal has been gaining attention again. Benefiting from the rapid development of big data storage and processing technology [1]- [4], as well as 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) R9's support for user equipment (UE) reporting Minimization of Drive-Tests (MDT) measurement reports [5], then communication service providers (CSPs) are able to collect, store and locating massive MDT data of the whole network, and then utilize these located MDT data to replace traditional drive test (DT) data to improve the efficiency of network optimization and reduce the cost of network operation and maintenance (O&M) [6]. In addition, with the advantage of wide coverage, the whole located MDT data can also be utilized in public security, such as crowd impact analysis for epidemic prevention assistance, suspect tracking, etc.…”

“…Recently, the localization method based on Base Station(BS) signal has been gaining attention again. Benefiting from the rapid development of big data storage and processing technology [1]- [4], as well as 3GPP R9's support for User Equipment(UE) reporting MDT measurement reports [5], CSPs(communication service providers) are able to collect the massive MDT data reported by UE in the whole network, and locate these MDT data through localization technology, and then utilize these located MDT data to help them to improve the efficiency of network optimization and reduce the cost of network O&M(Operation and Maintenance) [6]. For instance, in network weak coverage analysis and overlapping coverage analysis field, data collected by traditional manual DT(Drive Test) is only a sample of the whole network, which can not effectively show the actual network quality of the whole network in the interested areas.…”
