Performance evaluation of nonhomogeneous hospitals: the case of Hong Kong hospitals

Abstract: Throughout the world, hospitals are under increasing pressure to become more efficient. Efficiency analysis tools can play a role in giving policymakers insight into which units are less efficient and why. Many researchers have studied efficiencies of hospitals using data envelopment analysis (DEA) as an efficiency analysis tool. However, in the existing literature on DEA-based performance evaluation, a standard assumption of the constant returns to scale (CRS) or the variable returns to scale (VRS) DEA models… Show more

“…Among the application-oriented papers, Huang et al (2016) presents a study on the evaluation of hotels in Taiwan with non-homogeneity in hotel types where the hotels are divided into two non-homogeneous groups. Li et al (2018) is an application paper that deals with efficiency evaluation of non-homogeneous Hong Kong hospitals. Sun et al (2017) presents an application of heterogeneous DEA models in performance evaluation of bank systems.…”

“…Moreover, DEA gives the required information to move the inefficient DMUs to the efficient frontier [3]. DEA has been applied in various areas and applications such as sports [17,25], research and development (R&D) [1], banks [10], and hospitals [18].…”

“…Quality issues are a rapidly growing concern in the delivery of hospital services. Hospital financing constitutes the greatest share of health spending, making both policymakers and third-party payers (health insurers) more aware of the efficiency and quality of care delivered in inpatient settings [1,2,3,4]. In this context, a number of outcome-based quality measures have been proposed to assess the value for money in hospital care.…”
