Phase-locked loop (PLL) systems play a crucial role in grid synchronization. Since variations on the grid voltage parameters are in general uncertain, the dynamics of PLLs are by nature nonlinear. This fact imposes a relevant challenge to guarantee their stability. Unfortunately, as argued in this paper, there is a remarkable lack of global stability tests even for the most common approaches, such as the synchronous reference frame (SRF). In this case, there is only available a small-signal-linearized-modelbased approach to stability. The main issue of resorting to local conclusions is that synchronization is forced to operate under conservative conditions, where large-signal variations are forbidden. Needless to say, this has a detrimental impact on applications, since performance is limited by small disturbance assumptions. Motivated by this problem, in the present work, we provide global asymptotic stability tests for two fundamental PLL algorithms. Namely, the conventional SRF-PLL and the enhanced SRF-EPLL. To do so, we use a Lyapunov approach acting directly on nonlinear trajectories. Consequently, the provided stability proofs do not rely on any linearization technique, frequency-domain conversion, or small-signal model representation. The main contribution in this paper is a set of stability conditions that are valid in a global sense. Moreover, it is shown that these results have direct practical implications in the form of new robust PLL gain tuning guidelines.

The interconnection of new generating and storing devices to the power grid imposes the necessity of synchronizing, so the power flow can be manipulated and distributed. In the presence of an increasingly perturbed electric grid, many proposals of novel and modified synchronization techniques attained enough robustness to deal with known perturbations. However, such proposals exhibit drawbacks on their own, leaving open enhancement opportunities, mostly over their discrete implementation—e.g., sampling issues and not-considered inter/harmonics—and their inherent complexity—e.g., the need for frequency adaptability. In this work, three traditional synchronous reference frame (SRF) phase-locked loops (PLL) are modified to implement discrete filtering, such as the well-known proposals based on moving average filters (MAFs), to avoid the problems mentioned above, known for affecting the MAF’s performance. This proposal makes use of discrete, efficient units modularly assembled to yield a signal’s average, based on elliptic half-band filters. The proposed PLLs were tested and exhibited clear advantages—robustness against frequency disturbances—over MAF-based equivalents at standardized tests over a typical simulation environment, setting through this work an initial milestone for its verification and further incorporation in more complex synchronization topologies.

With the development of new energy, three-phase grid connected converter has been widely applied. In order to meet the requirement of synchronous signals extraction under the condition of asymmetry, dc components and harmonic distortion, the positive and negative sequence components, amplitude and fundamental frequency of the voltage signal need to be extracted accurately. Based on dual second order generalized integrator frequency locked loop (DSOGI-FLL), the synchronization signal can be extracted under voltage asymmetry and distortion. But when the three-phase voltage is asymmetrical, dc components and multiple harmonics are influenced by the DSOGI-FLL method, the synchronous signal cannot be extracted accurately. In this paper, the structure of second order generalized integrator (SOGI)is improved, and the difference node and adaptive filter are added on the basis of SOGI, and the method of synchronous signal extraction based on improved dual self-turning second order generalized integrator frequency locked loop (DSSOGI-FLL) is proposed. This method can eliminate the effect of asymmetrical, dc components and multiple harmonics, and can extract the positive and negative sequence components, phase and frequency information accurately and quickly. The accuracy and effectiveness of the improved DSSOGI-FLL method are verified by simulation analysis.
