While a growing body of literature has examined factors that contribute to Asian Americans’ negative body image, little research has investigated Asian Americans’ body image from a strengths-based perspective. This study thus presents the Pride in Asian American Appearance Scale (PAAAS), which was designed to measure the extent to which Asian Americans feel positively about their own racialized physical appearances as well as those of fellow Asian Americans. Items were developed through an extensive literature review, cognitive interviews, and expert feedback. Exploratory (N = 398) and confirmatory (N = 398) factor analyses suggested a bifactor model, consisting of 24 items comprising a general factor and four group factors: (a) Pride in Asian Features, (b) Preference for Asian American Appearance, (c) Asian Americans as Desirable, and (d) Action Promoting Asians’ Attractiveness. Internal consistency estimates as well as factor determinacies were high and demonstrated that the specified items adequately represented their intended factors. The PAAAS was significantly correlated in theoretically expected directions with collective self-esteem, internalized racist appearance bias, and psychological distress. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This study investigates K-pop and K-pop fandom as an ongoing social movement. With popular South Korean group BTS as a case study, I examine how their fans join together and use collective action to create social change. My research answered three primary questions: (1) “How have K-pop fans been involved in societal causes prior to their recent surge in activism in 2020?,” (2) “To what extent does K-pop represent a social movement?,” and (3) “Do either K-pop music or the artists themselves contribute to fan participation in social advocacy, and if so, how?” I find that K-pop fans do constitute a social movement due to their use of extra-institutional tactics, based on John Fiske’s (1992) concept of fandom as “subversive by design,” Henry Jenkins’ (1992) participatory fan culture framework, and Social Movement Theory (King, 2011). I also further Yoon’s (2017) thesis that pop culture can give those who face a lack of resources and authority a means to challenge the status quo, emphasizing K-pop fans’ innovative use of social media mobilization. By explaining how K-pop and its fans can be understood as a social movement, my research rethinks how we consider K-pop fandom and at the same time encourages K-pop fans to continue their activism work and to expand further. Through a literature review and my own observations framed by theories, I conclude that K-pop fans demonstrate potential to be a powerful force for social change.

Indonesia is a country with the highest development of the K-Pop target market in Southeast Asia. This also raises various participatory behaviors from fans. One form of participatory behavior is roleplaying, which is playing roles on social media using a K-Pop artist's identity. As roleplayers, they will present themselves as K-Pop artists and build relationships with other roleplayers. Twitter is the social media most commonly used by roleplayers because of its features that support identity presentation and personal communication with other people. Even though they use other people's identities, roleplayers will also build various interpersonal relationships with fellow roleplayers like in the real world, from friendships to romantic relationships. This study aims to explain how K-Pop artist roleplayers construct their identity and interpersonal relationships through Twitter. This research used symbolic interactionism theory as the guide. The research method used is qualitative, with research data obtained through questionnaires with open-ended questions and analyzed thematically. From the answers of 131 respondents, K-Pop artists' identity was the object that roleplayers were trying to present. They present it by providing factual information about the artist and forming a good self-image. The way they present the K-Pop artist's identity will affect their interactions with other roleplayers, which have several determining factors, namely similarities, trust, feedback, and the parasocial relationship with the used muse. This interaction will determine the formation of interpersonal relationships, including friendship and romantic relationships. There are different types of real-world roleplayer information given between their friends and lovers.
