Performance improvement of variable speed rotors by Gurney flaps

Abstract: Gurney flaps are used for improving the performance of variable speed rotors. An analytical model able to predict helicopter rotor power is first presented, and the flight data of the UH-60A helicopter is used for validation. The predictions of the rotor power are in good agreement with the flight test data, justifying the use of this tool in analyzing helicopter performance. A fixed Gurney flap can enhance the performance of variable speed rotors and expand the corresponding flight envelop, especially near st… Show more

“…GFs have also been studied as active flow control devices, as shown in the work of Camocardi et al [19], where the characteristics and structures of the flow pattern downstream the airfoil in the near wake were experimentally investigated. Recently, Han et al [20] analyzed the influence of fixed and retractable GFs in the performance of variable speed helicopter rotors. Their results showed that both fixed and retractable GFs enhanced the performance of the rotor and expanded the flight envelope.…”

“…More recently, Han et al [8] employed an analytical model to assess the potential performance improvements for variable rotor speed helicopters by using fixed as well as retractable Gurney flaps. It was found that the deployment of fixed Gurney flaps can enhance the performance variable speed rotors and consequently expand the rotorcraft flight envelope.…”

“…After conducting few tests, he found out that this simple modification allowed approaching turns with higher velocity and also increasing the car speed on straight lines. The simple construction of this device has encouraged researchers to investigate its application in different areas [7][8][9][10], and especially in wind turbines, where they do represent one of the most interesting solutions [11,12]. It has been found that the effect of the lift coefficient enhancement of the GF is connected with the change of the flow structure at the trailing edge, as it is shown in Figure 1, which reports the vorticity contours near the trailing edge of the airfoil.…”
