Performance investigation of a hybrid PV-diesel power system for remote areas

Abstract: Summary Algeria is in a region with an enormous potential of solar energy for power generation. However, photovoltaic (PV) power plants have not yet been developed sufficiently in the country, and its applications such as PV pumping, solar distillation, and solar heating. The main problem is the high maintenance, operating costs, fossil‐fuel transportation, and CO2 emission of Bordj Badji Mokhtar's (BBM's) diesel power plant that exhibits a noteworthy issue in south Algeria. This paper presents the results of … Show more

“…The method of harvesting of electric energy from PM with the use of SCB in comparison with analogues works effectively even in rapidly changing weather conditions and monitors the MPP of each module with sufficient accuracy. In the vast majority of analogues [2,3], the search for the maximum power point (MPP) is carried out at the level of sequential PM string. However, it is known that in a string, all solar panels cannot work in the MPP if it is formed by a direct electrical connection of the PM.…”

“…It is possible to increase the efficiency of the MHMS power supply system by means of the Hybrid Mobile Power Supply System (HMPSS). Today, autonomous energy supply systems using renewable energy sources for use in different geographical parts of the world are being intensively studied, both theoretically and experimentally [2] - [5]. However, for remote regions, where the implementation of the central grid is not economically feasible, the best option is to use HMPSS, which contain several sources of electricity generation: usually renewable photovoltaic modules (PM), and traditional -usually diesel generator (DG) [3], [4].…”

“…Algeria is committed to stabilize and reduce greenhouse gas emissions after the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 [2]. The greatest renewable energy sources in Algeria that can reduce the impact of global warming, we can cite, solar, biomass, wind, geothermal, and fuel cells energy [3,4]. They are sustainable, non-polluting and economically viable energies [5].…”

“…However, the COE from hybrid off‐grid systems is more economical than that from solar home‐only systems or diesel‐only systems . Further, a PV/diesel hybrid energy system was found to be more efficient for higher load and higher solar radiation with a lesser requirement of fuel storage for remote areas of Algeria . In a techno‐economic analysis of a standalone hybrid wind/fuel cell micro‐grid system for the Kouhin region in Qazvin, the capacity factor of the hybrid system was enhanced to 28.8% with a maximum contribution of 90.59% energy supply from wind turbines and 9.41% from fuel cells .…”
