PurposeThe purpose of this paper aims to make contributions to the debate on “performance measurement in practice” focussing on how organisational participants respond to the “new regime” of key performance indicators (KPIs) and whether KPIs materialise as intended in a transitional economy.Design/methodology/approachInspired by the epistemological instruction of Schatzki's practice theory, this paper draws on qualitative data collected through face-to-face interviews, observations and documentary analysis of a single organisation.FindingsKPIs were introduced at PK (a manufacturing concern in Czech Republic) but widely seen as contradictory, inconsequential, top-down and unrealistic. These lead organisational participants to adopt a pragmatic approach towards PM embracing KPIs' subjective assessment and manipulation, common sense or doing the job as given, and superficial compliance (symbolism).Research limitations/implicationsThe paper would be interesting to researchers because of its explanation of performance measurement practice in a distinct empirical setting, for its application of a practice theory inspired by Schatzki, and for inspiring new research agendas in transitional economies.Practical implicationsThe paper recommends the mobilisation of artefacts, such as various forms of bottom-up discussions, to encourage interactions between organisational members and influence individual beliefs and practical understandings of the intended managerial projects.Originality/valueThe paper has focussed on “organisations of practice” to unravel the “doings” of organisational participants to explore the micro-processes of PM which otherwise would have been ignored. These “doings” and “sayings”, linked by pools of understanding, rules or instructions, and a teleoaffective structure, enabled the authors to unmask inherent tensions and contradictions in a new regime of performance measures such as KPIs.

Consequently, three contingency factors found dominant in the studies carried out in developed countries are regressed on the analyzed controls and SPMS features. Strategic Performance Measurement Systems (SPMSs) are designed to present integrated information, which together with other controls in Management Control Systems (MCSs) helps managers to implement strategy properly and thus outperform the company's competitors. A wide range of potential factors impacting the design and use of SPMS and MCS has been studied by proponents of the contingency theory since the 1980s who soon found strategy to be one of the most dominant contingencies. But recent reviews of contingency theory provide mixed, sometimes even conflicting evidence, partly because of inconsistent definitions of MCS and SPMS, partly because of exploring contingencies in isolation from other context factors and components. This article addresses both of these challenges. Firstly, it introduces four distinctive features of SPMS and complements them with often neglected "Beliefs" and "Boundaries" controls from the influential MCS framework "Levers of Control" devised by Simons (1995). Secondly, the resulting MCS concept is tested by PLS-SEM whether or not it is influenced by contingency factors of size, industry and especially by two opposing Porter's generic strategic prioritiesdifferentiation and/or cost-leadership (low prices). Surprisingly, only the former is found to be positively connected to the features of SPMS, however, the link is not direct but mediated by improvements in Boundaries and Beliefs. So the study broadens current knowledge on antecedents of SPMSs, that are applied in the medium-sized and large companies. At the same time, the study urges managers trying to implement differentiation strategy not only to establish the SPMS with all analyzed features, but concurrently to promote values and other belief controls as well as to set organizational rules and boundaries. In other words, the implementation of differentiation strategy has to be accompanied by establishment of the MCS incl. Beliefs and Boundaries, not just SPMS. Contrary to this implication, in case of low-price strategy, the detailed analysis proves that Belief and Boundary components of MCS are not very important tools for achieving cost-leadership.

Článek se zabývá vývojem manažerského účetnictví v České republice od 90. let 20. století. Cílem je rozpoznat klíčové tendence tohoto vývoje a faktory, které na vývoj dominantně působily, a tato zjištění porovnat s vývojem v ostatních zemích střední a východní Evropy a se situací ve vyspělých zemích západní Evropy a Severní Ameriky. Dále jsou diskutovány využívané systémy (techniky) manažerského účetnictví v českých podnicích a jejich změny. Dominantními typy změn jsou přidání technik (strategické manažerské účetnictví, měření a hodnocení výkonnosti, řízení rizik, environmentální manažerské účetnictví a účetnictví udržitelného rozvoje) a obměna technik (kalkulace, plánování a rozpočetnictví, řízení nákladů a nákladové účetnictví); ke změnám typu redukce nedochází. Výzkum je založen primárně na systematické rešerši empiricky zaměřené literatury a sekundárně na heuristickém pozorování a rozhovorech. Klíčová slova: Manažerské účetnictví; Česká republika; Literární rešerše. JEL klasifikace: M41. 1 Úvod Jak se vyvíjelo manažerské účetnictví v České republice (dále jen ČR) od 90. let 20. století? Které faktory na tento vývoj dominantně působily? Liší se vývoj v České republice od vývoje v jiných zemích, které prošly nebo procházejí transformací způsobenou významnými celospolečenskými změnami v regionu střední a východní Evropy? Přibližuje se praxe v oblasti manažerského účetnictví v České republice praxi ve vyspělých zemích, zejména v západní Evropě a v Severní Americe? Jakým tématům by se mohl věnovat další empirický výzkum zaměřený na manažerské účetnictví v ČR? Cílem tohoto článku je přispět k odpovědím na výše uvedené otázky. Článek má teoretický i praktický přínos.
