Performance measures of 16– to 86-year-old males and females on the auditory verbal learning test

Abstract: This study reports Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) data for 153 adults in age groups spanning seven decades, with approximately equal numbers of males and females and matched for intelligence, education, and occupation. Overall performance deteriorated with increased age, females performing better than males. Older subjects recalled fewer words, were more susceptible to information overload during input, showed diminished retrieval efficiency, and had a decline in memory for the source of items. In contra… Show more

“…Women outperformed men in A6, retroactive interference and learning during the attempts. In the literature, there are reports that woman either outperformed men in recall trials but not in the recognition trial, 2,5,12,16 or that woman outperformed men in recall and recognition.…”

“…As recommended by Geffen et al, 5 proactive and retroactive interference, as well as forgetting speed, were calculated using quotients rather than differences. No differences in results were seen among age groups regarding these quotients, which is consistent with the results reported by other authors, 5,12 thus indicating that age has little influence on these abilities.…”

“…Participants with ADNFLE were also assessed on standard tasks of memory including the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and visual memory was assessed using Rey's Complex Figure (30-minute delay protocol; see Lezak et al [25]). z score statistics were computed for these tasks; RAVLT normative data were derived from Geffen et al [26], and for Rey's Complex Figure we used data from Spreen and Strauss [27]. Audioverbal attention (Digit Span from Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Third Edition (WAIS-3)) [28] and working memory (Letter Number Sequencing from the WAIS-3) were also assessed in the patient group.…”

“…4 In English-speaking countries, there are several studies providing parameters for the interpretation of results from this test. [5][6][7][8][9][10] In Brazil, normative standards for the test have been developed for the 16-to-89 year-old age bracket. 11 The cited study, however, adopted a translation of the list of words used in English-speaking countries, regardless of the frequency of these words in Portuguese (the language spoken in Brazil) or the number of syllables in each word on the list.…”
