Performance of 225 Dutch School Children on Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) Parallel Test-Retest Reliabilities with an Interval of 3 Months and Normative Data

Abstract: Performance on Dutch adaptations of Rey's AVLT was examined in a sample of 225 6- to 12-year-old Dutch school children, selected to be representative of the general population. With an interval of 3 months, they were tested twice, using two out of three test forms which proved to be parallel. No test-retest practice effects were apparent. Age had a considerable impact on test performance. Measured imperfectly, socioeconomic background and intellectual level had some additional influence, as did the examiner wh… Show more

“…We assessed verbal memory using a standardized Dutch version of the Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) (van den Burg and Kingma 1999). This test consists of five learning trials with immediate recall of words (tested after each presentation), a delayed recall trial, and a delayed recognition trial (van den Burg and Kingma 1999).…”

“…Verbal learning and memory subserve the mental lexicon, by a process of registration, storage, retention, and retrieval of verbal information (Lezak, 1995). Tests such as the Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) or the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) yield reliable indices of declarative learning and memory (Lezak, 1995; Mulder, Dekker & Dekker, 1996; Van den Burg & Kingma, 1999) and can be used to study word learning processes.…”

“…Little is known about the relation between these abilities over the course of development. Verbal learning and fluency continue to improve during late childhood (Sincoff & Sternberg, 1988; Van den Burg & Kingma, 1999) and adolescence (Clark, Paul, Williams, Arns, Fallahpour, Handmer & Gordon, 2006; Levin, Culhane, Hartmann, Evankovich, Mattson, Harward, Ringholz, Ewing‐Cobbs & Fletcher, 1991). To what extent improved performance on these tests relates to the development of general verbal abilities is unclear.…”
