“…[7,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Furthermore, somei nvestigationsh ave aimed at decreasing the amounts of ruthenium and iridium noble and scarce metals used by adding am ore abundant third" diluting" elementt om inimize the cost of the anode catalystw hile maintaining the catalytic properties. [14,[17][18][19][20][21] In our previousw ork, we described an environmentally friendly synthesis approach that avoids the use of any toxic solvent, [22] so as to obtain ruthenium-iridium-oxidea node materials that show high electrocatalytic activities and improved stabilities for ruthenium compositionsh ighert han 70 mol %. [23] In the presentw ork, we report the effect of the substitution of iridiumb yc erium on the electrocatalytic properties of ruthenium-iridium nanomaterials.…”

“…Although RuO 2 has shown the best OER performance among all the other materials [54,74], its poor stability due to the corrosion [75] from the strong local acidity at the perfluorosulfonic membrane, and high anodic potential, it requires the addition of the more stable IrO 2 [76,77]. However, Ir is one of the rarest elements on earth, and this sets the requirement to reduce/replace the Ir content in order to lower the price, such as by adding other elements that are more earth abundant, e.g., Co [78], Ta [79], and Sn [80]. A recent study reported the state-of-the-art OER performance of fluoride doped MnO 2 , IrO 2 solid solution ((Mn 1−x Ir x )O 2 :F), with even lower onset potential than IrO 2 [81], may further reduce the Ir loading of the OER catalysts.…”
