Performance of Broccoli Cultivars in Spring and Fall Evaluations in Pennsylvania

Abstract: Recent hypothetical modeling suggests that increasing commercial broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) acreage in the eastern United States has the potential to notably reduce the costs of transportation within the broccoli supply chain. In this region, increasing broccoli acreage will require production improvements. Here, research was conducted to determine the best yielding commercially available cultivars for broccoli production. Eighteen to… Show more

“…The impact of heat units and fluctuating temperatures on maturity dates, cultivar selection, and physiologic disorders for broccoli under high tunnels is a topic that would benefit from further exploration. Also, we chose to maximize head size (i.e., dinner-plate size) before harvesting, but many growers choose to harvest smaller heads and then return to cut subsequent side shoots (Sanchez et al, 2016); this decision impacted our days to harvest and total yield estimates.…”

“…Our model of conducting evaluations for 2 years at three sites brings rigor to the experiment, which facilitates publishing results in refereed journals. Thus far, six refereed articles from this program have been published [6][7][8][9][10][11], with two more in the pipeline. Additionally, recommendations have been disseminated through various extension channels, including articles and presentations at local and regional meetings and webinars.…”

“…Common objectives of cultivar evaluations include updating recommendations and identifying top and/or poor performing cultivars [5]. The objective of our program has been to provide farmers in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic region with recommendations for top-yielding cultivars, primarily in conventional systems [6][7][8][9][10][11]; although, performance in organic systems has also been evaluated [10]. Additionally, we have measured some produce quality attributes.…”
