Performance of broiler chickens supplemented with Mexican oregano oil (Lippia berlandieri Schauer)

Abstract: -The objective of this research was to evaluate the inclusion of two qualities of Mexican oregano oil (MOO) in broiler diets on broiler weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, average daily gain, and water intake. The qualities were MOO 1 (4% thymol, 60% carvacrol) and MOO 2 (40% thymol, 20% carvacrol). Nine treatments were prepared by the combinations of MOO 1 + MOO 2 (0, 400, and 800 mg kg −1 ; added per kg of feed) respectively: 0+0, 0+400, 0+800, 400+0, 400+400, 400+800, 800+0, 800+400, and 800+800. “…On the other hand, Nihat et al (2005), Betancourt et al (2012) and Freitas et al (2013) reported improvement in production variables due to the presence of thymol in oregano oil. Similar results were reported with various combinations of Mexican oregano oil (Vázquez et al 2015). In addition, the diet ingredients could alter the effect of the components of oregano oil as reported by Uni et al (1998) and Langhout et al (2000), who mentioned that the digestibility of the ingredients and the environmental conditions could play an important role and influence the effects of added natural additives.…”

“…These authors concluded that the oil mix acted as a growth promoter, positively affecting production parameters. The current results with Mexican oregano oil were similar to those of Jamroz et al (2005), Hong et al (2012), and Silva Vázquez et al (2015). Mountzouris et al (2011) indicated that incorporating 125 and 250 mg kg -1 of a commercial phytogenic feed additive strengthened broiler production and improved efficiency and FI at the final stage.…”

“…Performance efficiency results obtained by Basmacıoğlu et al (2004) with oregano oil were lower than results found in the current investigation with MOO. Silva Vázquez et al (2015) found improvements in productive efficiency when evaluating 400 and 800 mg kg -1 of MOO. Karimi et al (2010) showed differences in composition between Mediterranean and Mexican oregano oils, finding different responses in performance of broiler chickens.…”
