Performance of Circular Footing on Expansive Soil Bed Reinforced with Geocells of Chevron Pattern

Abstract: Results from laboratory model tests performed on circular footing are presented in this paper to understand the performance of geocell reinforced expansive soil. Naturally occurring expansive soil was used in this study as subsoil. Geocells of chevron pattern fabricated from geotextile made up of polypropylene were used to reinforce the soil bed. The parameters studied in this testing program were the placement depth of the geocell mattress, pocket size of geocell and the height of geocell mattress. Contrary t… Show more

“…The authors had also performed an experimental study to determine the optimum parameters for geocell and jute fibre reinforcement to improve the performance of a circular footing resting on expansive soil. A portion of the findings of this study were published in a research article [9]. Experiments with the test series and the parameters specified in Table 4 were therefore carried out to determine the efficacy of these optimal parameters in controlling the swelling of subgrade soil.…”

“…In mechanical stabilization, soil is stabilized by compaction with the inclusion of reinforcement, fibres or other non-biodegradable materials. In past, many studies have shown the inclusion of randomly distributed fibres [4][5][6] and geosynthetics [7][8][9] improve the strength & bearing capacity of expansive soils. Patil [10] described a laboratory method to measure the swelling pressure and an apparatus to carry out the test for remoulded or undisturbed soil samples.…”

“…Therefore, the geocells provide both the riverbank slope lateral and vertical resistance under external loads on the whole. Assuming the lateral restraint stress (∆σ 3 ) is determined by the deformation behavior of the soil inside the geocells and the mechanical properties of the geocell material [31], and using membrane theory proposed by Henkel and Gilbertd et al [32][33][34], ∆σ 3 can be expressed as…”

“…Research was conducted by Kumar et al [8] on the behavior of expansive soil reinforced with geocell and chevron patterns. The geocell mattress placement depth beneath the footing base, the geocell pocket size, the height of the geocell mattress, and the geocell pocket aspect ratio were among the several characteristics taken into consideration in this experimental work.…”
