Abstract: Although fluorescence-based and conventional methods present similar performance in detecting occlusal caries lesions in primary teeth, visual inspection alone seems to be sufficient to be used in clinical practice.

“…Other studies have used this system to compare caries diagnosis methods in deciduous teeth [18][19][20][21][22] and permanent teeth [23], and some of these are validated methods [24,25]. Some studies have analyzed the reproducibility and accuracy [26] of the methods, and others have identified their role in making decisions about the disease treatment and control [9,23].…”

“…A great number of studies deal with the development and the use of new technologies to improve the diagnosis of dental caries, especially at the early stages 5,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] . Generally, such studies are performed under controlled conditions, in vitro (laboratory settings) or in vivo (clinical settings) methodology.…”

“…For this reason, it is recommended to "wait and watch" and not to immediately "drill and fill" teeth 25 . According to Novaes et al 17 , visual inspection alone seems to be sufficient to detect dental caries satisfactorily. The results from CL1 and CL2 exams corroborate that statement in some degree.…”
