Performance of Low-Cost Agar fromGracilaria salicorniaon Tissue Culture ofPleurotusHK-37

Abstract: Currently, the demand of Pleurotus HK-37 (oyster mushroom) in Tanzania is growing rapidly due to the increasing of awareness on its nutrition, health, and economic benefits. Despite the increasing demand, the availability of strains of Pleurotus HK-37 species is still a challenge due to high cost of tissue culture technology. The high cost of importing agar seems to be among the factors for this failure. This study aimed at investigating the performance of low-cost agar from local Gracilaria salicornia on tiss… Show more

“…However, in vitro culture is more expensive than traditional plant production methods due to the components used to prepare the culture medium. Commonly, the gelling agent is agar [3]. Agar is a mixture of polysaccharides extracted from the walls of red algae and is the most widely used gelling agent in culture media due to its physicochemical properties, such as thermoreversibility, stability, gel strength, texture, elasticity, and transparency [4].…”

“…Agar is the most expensive substance in the media which contributes around 70% of costs (Mpatani and Vuai , 2019) The layout of setback effective micropropagation protocols is a prerequisite in the adoption of the low cost micro propagation technology in growing countries. Agar has stayed the ultimate frequently utilized gelling agent for culture media used for both microbes and plants.…”
