Performance of Masonry Buildings during the 2002 Molise, Italy, Earthquake

Abstract: The 2002 Molise, Italy, earthquake struck a relatively limited geographical area where the communities are mainly agrarian. While most buildings in the region are masonry, there are significant differences in the type of masonry construction, as material characteristics and construction practices had changed over the centuries. This paper focuses on the masonry buildings that predominate in domestic construction. The most significant features that contributed to the damage pattern appear to be (1) construction… Show more

“…Genellikle, yığma duvarlar kesmeden ötürü dayanımlarını yitirmeye başladıkları anda kil tuğlaların ezildikleri saptanmıştır. Yığma malzemeler arasındaki birleşimdeki bu kayıp, çatlakların başlamasını takiben göçmeye yol açabilmektedir [19]. Şekil-7'de delikli kil tuğla elemanlar kullanılmış ve eksik harç ile imal edilmiş duvarlarda oluşan deprem hasarları gösterilmiştir.…”

“…While incorporating countermeasures against several risks and their impacts, vernacular technologies are developed and found across the world. The performance of Dhajji-dewari, Nias, Himis, LambanTuha, Pombalino, Newari Chhen, Casa Baracada, Bhungas, Batak, Lombok, Tasikmalaya, among others during past events has proven the efficacy of vernacular houses (Boen 2001;Decanini et al 2004;Gulkan and Langenbach 2004;Bothara et al 2007;Winarno et al 2008;Amirrol 2010;Gautam 2014, Ortega et al 2015Gautam and Rodrigues 2015). In this regard cultural aspects and local resource led economic and appropriate constructions are incorporated in most of the indigenous settlements.…”

“…In the past research (Decanini et al, 2004;Nuti et al, 2007;Nuti et al, 2010) [4,14,16] a combination of the aforementioned measures was used for the seismic assessment of networks, on the basis of a judgmental choice of which one was the best in the case at study. The choice, in this study, to use the peak ground velocity, PGV as main parameter for the representation of the seismic action at site will be commented in the next section, since this topic is strictly related with damage representation.…”
