PurposeA healthcare unit's effectiveness largely depends on how well its interprofessional teams work together. Unfortunately, the strategies used to improve these teams often lack substance. This study analyzed these strategies and found a performance gap.Design/methodology/approachThis study took a unique mixed-method approach, systematically reviewing both qualitative and quantitative studies that identified strategies to enhance interprofessional teams in healthcare units. To gauge the effectiveness of these strategies, the researcher utilized an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) in four specialized clinical training centers in Hamadan province, Iran. The analysis of the IPA involved 35 experts from these centers as the statistical population.FindingsBased on a systematic review, there are seven categories: contextual, strategic, communication, organizational, individual, Human Resources Management (HRM), and environmental for promoting interprofessional teams with a total of 36 sub-indicator. Based on the IPA, the HRM aspect shows the most extensive performance gap. The individual and organizational aspects fall under resource wastage, and the environmental aspect is within the indifferent zone. Also, some critical sub-indicators, such as incentives/rewards, roles and responsibilities, financial resources, team-initiated innovation, the culture of respect, partner resources, humility, data availability, set expectations, and team availability, are in the weak areas.Practical implicationsThis research has identified critical areas for improvement in promoting teamwork in clinical training centers through a comprehensive gap analysis. It also presents practical policy solutions to address these weak points, providing a clear roadmap for enhancing interprofessional teams in healthcare units.Originality/valueImproving teamwork in healthcare can be challenging, but it is possible with proper strategies and tools. One of the highlights of the recent study was the combination of systematic review studies with IPA to identify areas for improving interprofessional teamwork in clinical training centers.

Marburg viral disease (MVD) is a highly infectious disease with a case fatality rate of up to 90%, particularly impacting resource-limited countries where implementing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures is challenging. This paper shares the experience of how Tanzania has improved its capacity to prevent and control highly infectious diseases, and how this capacity was utilized during the outbreak of the MVD disease that occurred for the first time in the country in 2023.In 2016 and the subsequent years, Tanzania conducted self and external assessments that revealed limited IPC capacity in responding to highly infectious diseases. To address these gaps, initiatives were undertaken, including the enhancement of IPC readiness through the development and dissemination of guidelines, assessments of healthcare facilities, supportive supervision and mentorship, procurement of supplies, and the renovation or construction of environments to bolster IPC implementation.The official confirmation and declaration of MVD on March 21, 2023, came after five patients had already died of the disease. MVD primarily spreads through contact and presents with severe symptoms, which make patient care and prevention challenging, especially in resource-limited settings. However, with the use of a trained workforce; IPC rapid needs assessment was conducted, identifying specific gaps. Based on the results; mentorship programs were carried out, specific policies and guidelines were developed, security measures were enhanced, all burial activities in the area were supervised, and both patients and staff were monitored across all facilities. By the end of the outbreak response on June 1, 2023, a total of 212 contacts had been identified, with the addition of only three deaths. Invasive procedures like dialysis and Manual Vacuum Aspiration prevented some deaths in infected patients, procedures previously discouraged.In summary, this experience underscores the critical importance of strict adherence to IPC practices in controlling highly infectious diseases. Recommendations for low-income countries include motivating healthcare providers and improving working conditions to enhance commitment in challenging environments. This report offers valuable insights and practical interventions for preparing for and addressing highly infectious disease outbreaks through implementation of IPC measures.

Background: Effective communication and teamwork is increasingly recognized as an important mechanism for enhancing the safety of healthcare. However, there is dearth of study on the pattern of communication among surgeons, nurses and anaesthetists in South Western part of NigeriaPurpose: This study assessed the patterns of communication and teamwork among operating theatre personnel and also identified barriers to communication and teamwork in the operating theatre in selected hospitals in Lagos State, Nigeria.Methods: A descriptive research design was adopted and a convenience sampling technique was used to select 215 nurse and doctor respondents for the study. With a 53-item self-developed structured questionnaire, data were collected. Results were presented descriptively (frequency tables and bar charts), and inferential statistics (Chi-square) were used to test the hypotheses.Results: Results revealed that 41.9% of the respondents had a fair knowledge of communication and teamwork in the operating theatre. Respondents described their pattern of communication as follows; the majority (99.5%) of the respondents communicate through written, spoken words or visual media, and 99.1% also communicate with other theatre personnel irrespective of their hierarchies. In addition, 90.7% reported that upward communication from patients to surgical team members is common in the theatre, while 87% submitted that they communicate through telephone conversations in this theatre. Individual bias, pressure to complete work, workload, poor leadership/lackadaisical attitudes and conflict of interest were identified as barriers to communication and teamwork in the operating theatre.Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of theatre personnel lack adequate knowledge of communication and teamwork in the operating room. Hence, there is a need for periodic training for operating personnel to improve communication and teamwork, and surgical outcomes.
