Performance of shear wall with external reinforcement by CFRP and steel sheets against blast load

Abstract: Increase of terrorist attack in the present time detects necessity of retrofitting of existent structures or design of new structures which can resist blast loads. In this research, a shear concrete wall subjected to explosive load will be analytically investigated. CFRP sheets will be applied for retrofitting the wall, and its performance in strengthening of the wall will be studied. Also a kind of shear composite wall is modeled and analyzed under the blast load. Results are compared, and advantages and disa… Show more

“…It should be mentioned that this method of analysis is perfect for dynamic phenomena that occur very fast, such as collisions, explosions, or impact loads or non-linear problems in which the contact conditions change, such as shaping. Earlier researches proved that the concrete damage plasticity will show the behavior of the concrete reliably [21], so this nonlinear behavioral model is used for concrete. The elements types are the same as those described in the validation section.…”

“…The C3D8R element considers large rotations and FE strains more accurately, making it possible to easily change the numerical model's thickness. Therefore, it is suitable for analyzing models with large strains, materials whose effective Poisson ratio is non-zero, and in cases where geometric nonlinearity of materials may occur (Shirinzadeh & Haghollahi, 2016). The cross-sectional characteristics are calculated using multiple four-node integrals in the plate thickness.…”

“…Two incidences are the attack of the Murrah Federal Building (Corley and Asce, 2004) or an accidental blast event in Tianjin Harbour-China, where the building was severely damaged with 165 casualties and a direct economic loss of RMB 6.866bn (Qin et al , 2017). Several resistant and protective systems, such as steel frames and steel plate shear walls (SPSWs), have been designed against explosive loads (Shirinzadeh and Haghollahi, 2016; Ostadhossein and Lotfi, 2018). Furthermore, many tall buildings use steel elements as their main material; hence, evaluating the performance and damage of steel members under blast loading is essential.…”

“…Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the vulnerability and damage of steel elements under extreme loading scenarios (Zheng et al , 2019; Stewart and Morrill, 2015; Shirinzadeh and Haghollahi, 2016; Longère et al , 2013). Several studies (Louca et al , 1998; Neuberger et al , 2007; Ostadhossein and Lotfi, 2018; Tag and Ngo, 2016; Tavakoli and Kiakojouri, 2014; Jacob et al , 2004; Langdon et al , 2005) focused on the response of steel plates subjected to blast loading.…”
