Performance of sheep grazing Panicum maximum cv. Massai and supplemented with protein sources during the dry season

Abstract: The low quality of tropical grasses in the dry season justifies the use of dietary supplements to meet the nutritional needs of sheep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with high-protein feed on mutton sheep performance and yield in Massai grass pastures during the dry season. The treatments corresponded to four supplements, namely Leucaena leucocephala leaf hay, Gliricidia sepium leaf hay, soybean meal, and a treatment that received only multiple mixture (protein salt) … Show more

“…Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) is a leguminous tree with great potential for use in livestock due to its high protein value (MARTINELE et al, 2014;SANTANA et al, 2019). Providing this material in preserved form results in production indices similar to those achieved with supplementation with soy (FERNANDES et al, 2020). Evaluating this ingredient in ruminant diets is an important step to elucidate its benefits in animal feeding as well as reduce the costs of production systems , since protein concentrates are one of the costliest items of the animal diet.…”

“…When used in the form of hay, legumes can be a strategic reserve of fiber and protein for prolonged periods of drought [ 13 ]. Some of the main legumes used in the Brazilian semi-arid region are gliricidia ( Gliricidia sepium ), “catingueira” ( Caesalpinia bracteosa ), “sabiá” ( Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth ) and “catanduva” ( Piptadenia moniliformis Benth ), due to important characteristics for animal production such as perenniality, high crude protein content (>16%) and average ruminal dry matter degradability of 50–60% [ 14 , 15 ].…”
