Performance of single‐gene noninvasive prenatal testing for autosomal recessive conditions in a general population setting

Julia Wynn,
Jennifer Hoskovec,
Rebecca D. Carter
et al.

Abstract: ObjectiveCarrier screening with reflex to single‐gene noninvasive prenatal testing (sgNIPT) is an alternative approach for identifying pregnancies at risk for inherited autosomal recessive conditions without the need for a sample from the reproductive partner. This study is the largest clinical validation of this approach in a general population setting.MethodsThe clinical performance of carrier screening with reflex to sgNIPT for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, alpha thalassemias, and beta hemoglobi… Show more

“…N ucleic acid detection is a widely accepted gold standard procedure, primarily for its ability to generate early diagnostics and its high specificity and sensitivity. 1−3 It is primarily used for prenatal diagnostics, 4,5 newborn genetic disease screening tests, 6,7 early cancer diagnosis, 8,9 virus genotyping, 10,11 and infectious disease detection. 12,13 Notably, it plays a significant role during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in outbreak management, pathogen identification, contact tracing, etc.…”

It is primarily used for prenatal diagnostics, , newborn genetic disease screening tests, , early cancer diagnosis, , virus genotyping, , and infectious disease detection. , Notably, it plays a significant role during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in outbreak management, pathogen identification, contact tracing, etc. , Liu et al effectively used RT-qPCR to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in the Huanan seafood market, providing important insights into the distribution and prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak . Broughton et al used a CRISPR-Cas12-based lateral flow assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory swab RNA extracts.…”
