Performance of the grating-crystal monochromator of the ALOISA beamline at the Elettra Synchrotron

Abstract: The new beamline ALOISA, now operational at the Elettra Synchrotron, is designed for surface studies by means of several experimental techniques: surface x-ray diffraction and reflectivity, photoemission spectroscopy, photoelectron diffraction, e Ϫ -Auger coincidence spectroscopy. A new monochromator has been specifically designed and realized for this multipurpose beamline: it makes use of a channel-cut Si crystal dispersive element for the 3-8 keV range and of a plane mirror-plane grating element for the 200… Show more

“…XPS measurement of the N-1s and C-1s core-levels were performed at the Aloisa beamline of the Elettra synchrotron radiation facility in Trieste. 22 Experiments have been done in an UHV chamber with base pressure better than 1×10 −10 mbar using a photon energy of 500 eV, with high energy-resolution of 180 meV. The binding energy scale was calibrated with respect to the Au-4f 7/2 core level at the clean substrate.…”

“…The LEED and STM experiments were carried out at Bariloche using an ultra-high vacuum system from Omicron-Nanotechnology. The HR-XPS experiments were carried out at the ALOISA beam line 25,26 of the ELETTRA synchrotron, at Trieste.…”

“…The metal samples were cleaned with cycles of sputtering (Ar + pressure of 1×10 -6 mbar) and annealing (800 K), and the molecules were deposited on the clean samples kept at room temperature. NEXAFS and XPS have been recorded at the D1011 beamline at MAX-Lab (Lund, Sweden) and at ALOISA beamline 9 at Elettra (Trieste, Italy). They provide precise chemical information of the surface reactions, and are highly useful to understand the mechanisms of (cyclo)dehydrogenation in an atomistic way.…”
