The aim of this study involves establishing a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (3D-CFD) model of solar flat plate collector (SFPC) in order to investigate the effect of operating and geometric parameters on thermal efficiency. In this research work, commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT ® 14.0 version was used for the development of a model of solar plate collector. The single circular tube geometry was created using ANSYS DesignModeler ® 14.0. The general continuity equation along with Navied-Stokes equations was solved for tracking motion of the working fluid. The general k-ε turbulence modeling approach was used for solving the turbulence in the flow. Solar ray tracing was activated for calculating solar load in the model. The latitude and longitude of the Hyderabad region were inserted in the solar raytracing model for calculating solar intensity as per local conditions. Two fluids i.e., water and air were circulated with different flow rates in the developed model of SFPC. It was observed that water gave higher efficiency due to high density and thermal conductivity. The simulation results gathered revealed that the temperature of water and air was raised by almost 79 °C and 73 °C respectively.

Solar water heaters (SWHs) are one of the most effective plans for general and easy use of solar energy to supply hot water in domestic and industrial sectors. This paper gives the first-ever attempts to assess the optimal localization of SWHs across 22 major cities in Zambia, as well as determine the possibility of hot water generation and model the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission saving. The climate data used is extracted by using the MeteoSyn software which is modeled in TSOL™. Results show the high potential of GHG emission reduction due to nonconsumption of fossil fuels owing to the deployment of SWHs, and three cities Kabwe, Chipata, and Mbala had the highest GHG mitigation by 1552.97 kg/y, 1394.8 kg/y, and 1321.39 kg/y, respectively. On average, SWHs provide 62.47% of space heating and 96.05% of the sanitary hot water requirement of consumers. The findings have shown the potential for the deployment of SWHs in Zambia. The techno-enviro study in this paper can be used by the policymakers of Zambia and countries with similar climates.

An experimental study has been carried out to enhance a solar air heater’s performance by integrating artificial roughness through baffles on the absorber plate. In this paper, the thermal and energy matrices analysis of a Solar Air Heater (SAH) roughened with V up perforated baffles have been investigated. The effect of various mass flow rates on the SAH was analyzed with and without baffles. Experimental outputs like outlet air temperature, useful energy (heat) gain and thermal efficiency were evaluated to confirm the performance improvement. The baffled absorber plate SAH was found to give the maximum thermal efficiency and useful energy gain of 89.3% and 1321.37 W at a mass flow rate of 0.0346 kg/s, 13% and 12% higher than SAH without baffle. This result showed that the V up-shaped ribs in flow arrangement provide better thermal performance than smooth plate SAH for the parameter investigated. Energy matrices analysis and carbon dioxide mitigation of the SAH system were also analyzed.
