Performance of Thixotropic Gel Electrolytes in the Rechargeable Aqueous Zn/LiMn2O4 Battery

Abstract: Novel aqueous gel electrolytes have been prepared using a combination of thixotropic and nonthixotropic gelling agents. These gels are used in rechargeable hybrid aqueous batteries for the first time. Thermogravimetric analysis proves that the retentions of the gel electrolytes in the absorbed glass mat (AGM) separator are significantly higher than that of the conventional liquid electrolyte. Batteries with the gel electrolytes exhibit up to 10% improvement in specific reversible capacity and higher rate capab… Show more

“…When using the 5 %FS gel electrolyte, the deposit looked more flat than for the others. The effect of gel electrolytes on dendrite suppression was previously published by our group . However, the 5 % FS gel electrolyte exhibited slightly higher corrosion‐current density and lower corrosion potential (Figure , Table S1), and, therefore, it was necessary to introduce a corrosion inhibitor into this gel electrolyte.…”

“…The effect of gel electrolytes on dendrite suppression was previously published by our group. [40] However, the 5% FS gel electrolyte exhibited slightly higher corrosion-current density and lower corrosion potential ( Figure 3, Ta ble S1), and, therefore, it was necessary to introduce ac orrosion inhibitor into this gel electrolyte. The 0.2 wt % pyrazole-containinge lectrolyte and its gel electrolyte (the 5%FS + 0.2%P) supported flake-like growth of Zn.…”

“…The specific capacity maintains 92% after 1000 cycles (Figure b). Generally, using the hybrid aqueous electrolyte (Na 2 SO 4 , MnSO 4 , and ZnSO 4 ) could enhance the electrochemical performance of the alkali manganese oxide, including LiMn 2 O 4 , KMn 8 O 16 , and K 0.224 MnO 1.947 ·0.887H 2 O …”

“…This electrolyte holds also the ability to depress Zn dendrite growth and corrosion, guaranteeing the flexible ZnÀ MnO 2 battery high cycling stability, rate capability, and durability. By adding thixotropic fumed silica (FS) and non-thixotropic β-cyclodextrin (CD) into ZnSO 4 + Li 2 SO 4 liquid electrolyte, Hoang and Chen et al [244] developed a FS + CD composite gel electrolyte for hybrid aqueous batteries. This gel electrolyte can also enhance the specific capacity and cycling stability of the batteries, due to the suppression of Zn dendrite growth.…”
