Performance of Two Trichogrammatid Species from Zambia on Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a noctuid moth native to the tropical and subtropical Americas that has successfully invaded Africa and Asia, where it is has become a serious threat to food security as a pest of cereals and other crops. Biological control is an environmentally friendly means of combating the pest and contributes to an integrated pest management approach. In our study, two egg parasitoid species (Trichogramma mwanzai and Trichogrammatoidea lutea) found in parasitized f… Show more

“…FAW eggs are attacked mainly by Te. remus and more occasionally by species of the genera Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea (Kenis et al 2019;Sisay et al 2019b;Elibariki et al 2020;Laminou et al 2020;Sun et al 2021a). Both eggs and larvae sometimes suffer surprisingly high rates of parasitism for a non-indigenous species.…”

“…For most parasitoid species, the preference may be influenced by host age, host size and high-quality hosts [ 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 ]. For example, Trichogramma mwanzai and Trichogrammatoidea lutea parasitism significantly decreases with the increasing FAW host age [ 73 ]. Similar results were reported on T. dendrolimi that parasitized Mythimna separata (Walker) egg [ 74 ].…”
