Performance Outcomes After Metacarpal Fractures in National Basketball Association Players

Abstract: Background:The aim was to determine whether players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who sustain metacarpal fractures demonstrate decreased performance upon return to competition when compared with their performance before injury and that of their control-matched peers. “…We obtained injury data for NBA players from Pro Sports Transactions (http://www. prosportstransactions.com), which has been used in prior research to identify player injuries in the NBA (Begly, Guss, Ramme, Karia, & Meislin, 2016;Guss et al, 2016;Leeds, Leeds, & Motomura, 2015). The data are comprehensive in listing the date a player was injured but less comprehensive in listing the date a player recovered from injury.…”

“…There are several limitations in this study, which have been outlined in previous studies using this methodology. 1,[3][4][5][6][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] Despite a rigorous methodology and search method, our sample size is small akin to the sample size of other NBA-related injury studies [1][2][3][4]6,[17][18][19][21][22][23][24]42,43 ; this may underpower some of our results. Due to the retrospective nature of the study, detailed data on surgical treatment, postoperative rehabilitation, presenting symptoms, injury severity, and radiographic data were unavailable.…”
