Performance Studies on PEM Fuel Cell with 2, 3 and 4 Pass Serpentine Flow Field Designs

Abstract: The geometrical and flow parameters are governing the performance of the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). The flow channels are used for distributing the reactants uniformly throughout the active area of fuel cell. Among different flow field designs, the serpentine flow field can give better performance to the PEM fuel cell. This paper numerically investigates the effects of the serpentine flow field with different number of passes. The 2 pass, 3 pass and 4 pass serpentine flow field designs of same… Show more

“…Similarly, single ladder flow achieved high performance compared to interdigitated flow field. Also, it must be mentioned that as the number of ladder increases, it is not necessarily led to significant increase in the power density (Jang et al, 2008;Jeon et al, 2008;Muthukumar et al, 2014;Wang et al, 2008;Yan et al, 2006).…”

“…Detail nomenclatures and acronyms used in this article are provided in Table 1. Using the software Solid Works , three types of flow paths (Kumar and Reddy, 2004; Maharudrayya et al , 2004), namely, single ladder, double ladder and interdigitated, having an active area of 25 × 25mm, with 1 mm × 1 mm channel were designed (Table S1). The design has been implemented using ANSYS Academic Version 18.2.…”

“…From the comparison of 2, 3 and 4 pass SFF of same rib and channel size, it was found that the performance of 3 pass SFF was better compared to others [58] . Similarly from the comparison of 3, 6 and 9 pass SFF, it was found that the performance of 6 pass SFF was better compared to others [59] .…”

“…All models adopted the same calculation domain and the position of inlet/outlet to avoid errors. Table 2 shows the main geometric parameters referenced during the modeling process [19][20][21]. The shape of the polygonal structure and the number of layers of spiral flow channels were selected as the key factors affecting the structural performance of such a flow field.…”
