Performance test of RM CLEAN and its evaluation with chi-square value

Abstract: RM CLEAN is a standard method to reconstruct the distribution of cosmic magnetic fields and polarized sources along the line of sight (LOS) from observed polarization spectrum. This method is similar to the CLEAN algorithm for aperture synthesis radio telescope images but it is rather unclear in what cases RM CLEAN works well. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of RM CLEAN by simulating spectro-polarimetric observations of two compact sources located in the same LOS, varying the relative initial polari… Show more

“…In addition, when F(f) is constructed from an observed polarization spectrum, effects such as a false signal in RM CLEAN (Farnsworth et al 2011;Kumazaki et al 2014;Miyashita et al 2016) as well as the limited frequency coverage and noises in observation need to be considered. For instance, the shape of F(f) could depend on the wavelength because of an imperfect Fourier transform due to the limited sampling of the squared wavelength.…”

“…Some techniques have been proposed to overcome such problems and to optimize the reconstruction of Faraday-complex spectra (Frick et al 2010;Li et al 2011). All of them assume a model for the synchrotronemitting and Faraday rotating medium, and nowadays their performances are still tested and debated (see, e.g., Sun et al 2015;Miyashita et al 2016;Schnitzeler 2018;Ideguchi et al 2018, for the comparison of RM clean with other methods).…”

“…The following works do not address the technical problems of Faraday tomography. Improvement of Faraday tomography such as RM CLEAN and QU-fitting [60][61][62][63][64] is another important work; see also some articles in this volume.…”
