Performance Tuning for Power Electronic Interfaces Under VSG Control

Abstract: Renewable generation, such as solar PV and wind power, is commonly integrated into the power grid through inertialess power electronic interfaces (PEIs). Due to the increasing penetration of renewable generation, the frequency stability of the current power system deteriorates. In order to sustain the desired level of the overall inertia, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) algorithm has been proposed. The concept of VSG is to enable the PEIs to emulate the external properties of traditional synchronous ge… Show more

“…It is noted that the fundamental discrepancy between RESs and SGs is the capability of providing frequency responses and the dispatchability in the domain of frequency stability. Therefore, the concept and control strategies of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) are prompted to incorporate asynchronous RESs into the frame of active power and frequency control [8]- [13]. For practical energy sources, the emulation of IR and PFR can be realized by the "hidden inertia" for wind turbines, storage, and deloading strategy [14].…”

“…Two instantaneous power components (p, q) are defined as functions of output voltages (v od , v oq ) and currents (i od , i oq ) of VSG units in ( 6) and (7). Two low-pass filters with the cut-off frequency of ω c are applied in series with power calculator [18].…”

“…The enhanced power decoupling mechanism in [6] applies virtual steady-state synchronous impedance and current compensation in the VSG controller to improve the dynamic performance and the stability of the system. The VSG parameters effects on performance indices have been analyzed in [7] and an algorithm has been proposed to tune these parameters to achieve the preferred performance indices.…”
