This text reflects on an artistic practice based on repeated visits to chosen trees, performing for camera with them in the context of the project ‘Meetings with Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees’. The individual daily practice of becoming a tree, based on a yoga exercise, together with a variety of trees, is complemented with a collective online performance, the ‘Be-coming Tree’ event. The daily practice brought to the fore the tension between a heightened perceptual awareness of the bodymind while balancing and the awareness of the tree and the broader environment. Noticing the tension between an inward and an outward focus, the text proposes that sustaining this very tension is relevant for developing an ecologically informed consciousness of our co-dependency with other life forms, such as trees.

Graffiti and street art research (GSAR) has become more acknowledged within the academic discourse; however, it has much to gain from theorising its methodological aspects. As a multidisciplinary field, GSAR has mostly used qualitative research methods, exploring urban space through methods that range from visual recordings to ethnography, emphasising the researchers’ reflexivity. This qualitative approach has, however, paid little attention to the role of embodied practices. In this paper we discuss how embodied methodologies provide multisensory research results where the experienced moments, the participant’s and researcher’s senses, cognition and mobility in urban spaces are connected. Our discussion draws on the authors’ fieldwork experiences of walking and edge working, and on the literature concerning embodiment and embodied methodology related to the context of GSAR.

Performing with trees and the tide – a diffractive reading

This text explores diffractive reading as a method combining two video works of performing with trees with some philosophical examinations of the specificities of vegetal being, asking whether performing with trees could increase our understanding of life forms and phenomena unlike us. Based on physicist and queer theorist Karen Barad's ideas on diffraction and philosopher Michael Marder's ideas of the challenges that plants present us with, this text weaves together experiences of two one-day performances for camera together with small trees on the seashore in Thailand in 2016 and on Lofoten in 2017. Juxtaposing descriptions of one video work with working notes from the process of creating another work, and interweaving these with theoretical remarks, the 14 Research in Arts and Education | 3 / 2019 text examines these examples of performing with trees using diffractive reading as a tool, while at the same time exploring diffractive reading as a method with the help of these examples.
