Performing low-altitude photogrammetric surveys, a comparative analysis of user-grade unmanned aircraft systems

Abstract: This paper shows results of comparing performances of four unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in terms of photogrammetric survey’s quality. This study aims to investigate what is the more suitable UAS for specific applications considering the required scale factor, such as for architectural, environmental, and restoration purposes. A series of photogrammetric surveys were conducted in a hilly area of about 5 ha using Phantom 4 Adv, Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic Air 2, and Mavic Mini 2. These unmanned aircrafts are commercia… Show more

“…In addition, flight altitude, camera properties determine the resolution of the images captured. Though we obtain good resolution with a 4K camera at 30 m, other researchers [13][14][15] conducted flights at ranges of 6-10 m for better image resolution. UAVs flying at a low-altitude provide high-resolution data, which are useful in detecting plastic, metal, and other litter in rivers.…”

“…The GSD is the size of the projection of one pixel on the ground and is a function of the focal length of the camera, flight altitude, and physical dimensions of sensor's pixels. The GSD places a lower limit on the precision achievable for points on the ground [13]. In addition, flight altitude, camera properties determine the resolution of the images captured.…”

“…The images must include 3D coordinates and aerial triangulation to determine the correctness of the mapping. The criteria for assessing aerial geometry in photogrammetry are now the same as in classic photogrammetry (Mugnai et al, 2022).…”

“…In [11], by utilization of the combined synthetic-aperture-radar data, integrated GPS/GNSS data and UAVs aerial images, an integrated ground deformation monitoring vision is developed and tested in the field. In [12], outcomes of comparing four-UAV performances, are evaluated in terms of photogrammetric quality. The quality was verified by comparing the ground targets' coordinates extracted from the point clouds to the measured ones on the field with indirect geo-referencing utilizing GNSS.…”
