Peri-Diaurated Naphthalene: Synthesis and Reactions of a New Class of Organogold(I) Complexes Containing Bridging, Dianionic Naphthalenediyl Ligands

Abstract: The dinuclear gold(I) compound [Au2(μ-C10H6){μ-Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2}] was prepared in high yield by the reaction of 1,8-bis(trimethylstannyl)naphthalene with [Au2Cl2(μ-Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2)]. Oxidative addition with halogens results in the formation of the dihalodigold(II) complexes [Au2(X)2(μ-C10H6){μ-Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2}] (X = Cl, Br, I) containing a gold−gold bond.

“…Gold complexes can also form three coordinate structures by oxidative addition of halides or alkylhalides to form gold(II) complexes. This mechanism is most commonly seen for dinuclear substrates with bridging ligands [16], dithiocarbamates [17], and phosphine annular ions [18]. Radical initiated oxidative addition has also been reported in both gold complexes and with other metals [19].…”

“…Initial attempts to transfer the 1,1′‐ferrocenediyl group to a gold(I) centre using the tin(IV) compound [Fe(η 5 ‐C 5 H 4 SnMe 3 ) 2 ] as transmetallation reagent, which we had previously developed for this purpose, were unsuccessful , . However, the reaction of ferroceneboronic acid with various gold–phosphine compounds in the presence of base afforded multimetallic complexes [FcAu(PPh 3 )] ( 1 ) and [(µ‐P‐P)(AuFc) 2 ] {P‐P = dppe ( 2 ), dppf ( 3 )}, in high yields as air‐stable orange compounds (Scheme ).…”

“…We have previously investigated the chemistry of gold with the dicarbanionic bridging ligand [1,8‐C 10 H 6 ] 2– . Given that the planar, aromatic naphthalene backbone is not very flexible, we wished to find an alternative dicarbanionic ligand with greater flexibility, which could still support a short gold–gold distance.…”

“…Mohr and coworkers [149,150] studied the transmetallation of various arylstannanes to gold(I) chloride complexes. While aryl(tributyl)stannanes were found to be inert, the trimethyl counterparts afforded the corresponding arylgold(I) complexes (Scheme 3.60).…”
