This novel study explores the driving forces and dynamics of rapid urbanization, highlighting the main causes and effects of urban explosion, environmental disruption, and city pattern transformation. This study was carried out that how urbanization and urban sprawl have influenced the structure of the city of Sulaymaniah in Kurdistan region of Iraq. This is because over the years many urban areas have experienced dramatic growth and population explosion that has resulted in the exhaustion of social amenities in the concerned communities. For this purpose, a qualitative method is used based on in-depth face-to-face interviews with local authority, including planners, architects, and experts of master planning, as well as professors in the academic institutions. This study also utilizes extensive document analysis to present the evolution of urban growth. The findings reveal that the autonomy, political conflict, non-implementation of master plans, and economic prosperity are the driving forces which are accelerating this urbanization process. It is proposed that the practical policies and strategic urban development plans are urgent requirement to control the unplanned urban growth and stimulate the desired sustainable future urban development.

By strengthening transnational linkages, and those between urban centres, and rural and coastal areas, the tourism industry has fostered new dynamics around the use of land, including territories subjected to extreme environmental hazards. Using the case of Mancora, Peru, this paper explores how a lack of land governance structures, resulting from conflicts between local authorities in the context of coastal tourism development, has triggered processes of uncontrolled urbanisation within fishing villages cyclically affected by the El Niño event. Based on ethnographic material collected via semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and archival research, the study demonstrates how new dynamics around the use of land are increasing land conflicts, while raising the degree of environmental vulnerability to which the population is exposed, and threatening the reproduction of local models of development. It stresses the need for land governance structures to ensure the sustainability of coastal territories where land markets have intensified due to tourism.

Rapid urbanization can cause remarkable and high fragmentation of urban landscapes, which will affect the function and services of landscapes and result in a series of ecological and environmental problems. To identify the spatial structure and explore the effects of internal features on this structure, we propose a spatial-adjacencybased method for interactions between urban main roads (main road corridors) and the urban landscape. Dongguan was used as the research area, for the sample period 1997-2013. Urban land patches were analyzed comprehensively, based on the spatial relationship with main roads, and according to landscape indices and landscape gradients. Furthermore, to explore the overall spatial attraction and spillover effects of the main road corridors, an extended Voronoi-based spatial-adjacency measuring index (EVSAI) was proposed to measure geographic adjacency. Finally, we established one complete set of classification criteria relevant to the changing patterns of the spatial structure. The experimental results indicated a dense network of main road corridors in the regions adjacent to the central area of Dongguan. The findings further revealed that the landscape pattern experienced three stages of spatiotemporal changes spanning the 16 years: central sprawl (1997-2005), peripheral sprawl (2005-2009), and central sprawl (2009-2013).
