Abstract: Under physiological conditions, the pericardial cavity contains serous fluid (15-50 ml), which belongs to the plasma ultrafiltrate and is visualized during echocardiography only in systole. The thickness of the pericardium in an adult averages 2 mm (1-3 mm).
