Pericarp of the Fruit of Garcinia Mangostana as Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in Hydrochloric Acid Medium

Abstract: The corrosion inhibition effect of acid extract of the pericarp of the fruit Garcinia mangostana on mild steel in hydrochloric acid medium is studied. Using weight-loss data, corrosion rate (CR) and thermodynamic parameters such as energy of activation for corrosion of mild steel (E), heat of adsorption of the inhibitors on the metal surface (Q) and change in free energy (∆G) are calculated. Adsorption isotherm is also recorded between log C and θ. Electrochemical parameters are evaluated from AC impedance and… Show more

“…The values of Cdl are judged to be lower than those of the blank values, confirming the adsorption of the inhibitor onto the metal surface, forming an electronic double layer [45]. These results are in good agreement with those obtained by polarization, where fenugreek extract proves to be a good inhibitor for aluminum in 1 M HCl with an efficiency of 83.79% in the extract with ethanol, 85.87% for the extract with DCM and 72.66% for the extract with pentane at 1400 ppm (Table 3).…”

“…The values of increase with the growth of inhibitor concentration while Cdl values are decrease. The increase of values may suggest the formation of a protective layer on the electrode surface [24]. The charge transfer resistance values (RT) were calculated according to the difference between impedance values at lower and higher frequencies.…”

“…Most of the efficient corrosion inhibitors used in industries is organic compounds having multiple bonds and hetero atoms like nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur, through which they are adsorbed on the metal surface. They function by interfering with either the anodic or cathodic reactions or both (Vinod Kumar et al, 2010).…”
