Peridotite enclaves hosted by Mesoarchaean TTG-suite orthogneisses in the Fiskefjord region of southern West Greenland

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis study presents bulk-rock major, trace, and platinum-group element data, as well as mineral chemistry for peridotites which form large enclaves (up to 500 Â 1000 m) within Mesoarchaean orthogneisses of the Akia terrane in the Fiskefjord region, southern West Greenland. The largest peridotite body, known as Seqi, contains highly fosteritic olivine with a median Mg# of 92.6 and hosts extensive layers of chromitite, which can be traced for tens of metres with thicknesses of up to 30 cm. Thinner… Show more

“…2.8 Ga Storø Supracrustal Belt cropping out further south (Szilas et al 2014). Supracrustal rocks are also found intercalated with meta-gabbronoritic and ultramafic rocks that may represent layered intrusive complexes (Szilas et al 2015). The supracrustal rocks found in the Akia Terrane are interpreted as remnants of arc-related oceanic crust, a model which has the precursor to the orthogneiss intruded within a convergent plate-tectonic setting (Garde 1990(Garde , 1997Garde et al 2000;Szilas et al 2017).…”

“…The peridotites occur as large discontinuous lensoid bodies within tonalitic orthogneiss. Exposures of these peridotites can be found in the Miaggoq, Seqi, Ulamertoq, and Amikoq ultramafic bodies, which are also associated with noritic rocks [1] ( Figure 1B). [22]); (C) Geologic map of Ulamertoq peridotite body showing the sampling locations of chromitites with zoned chromites (filled circle) and homogeneous chromites (filled square) (adapted from Garde [21]).…”

“…The same zonation is not observed with the accessory chromite in the peridotite host, which is characterized by Cr enrichment from core to rim. Fields of the olivine-spinel mantle array (OSMA) [4] and Seqi ultramafic complex [1] are shown for reference; (C) The homogeneous chromites are characterized by higher TiO2 contents compared to the zoned chromites. Fields for Rhum layered complex [29], Ujaragssuit [30], and Fiskenaesset [31] are included for comparison.…”
