Periimplant Bacteria Associated With Different Transmucosal Designs or Smoking Habits

Abstract: Prevalence of putative pathogens with bone-level implants was higher than tissue-level implants in nonsmokers. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were significantly higher in smokers. Smoking therefore strongly influenced peri-implant bacterial composition of bone-level implant.

“…34 Moreover, wettability/hydrophobicity and surface-free energy also influence the formation of biofilm on implants. 24,35 Moreover, as connections and prosthetic variables changed the microbiota around implants, 21,23,[36][37][38][39] as well as the peri-implant region and healthy remaining teeth, [40][41][42] our study analyzed only screw-rehabilitated prostheses in periodontally healthy individuals. This approach allows an unbiased comparison between smokers and non-smokers in relation to their peri-implant microbiome.…”

“…Regarding microbiological aspects, the results are still limited. Some studies using target‐ended techniques found higher concentrations of “classic” periodontal pathogens, ie, Porphyromonas gingivalis , Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola . Using a high‐throughput approach, Tsigarida et al found more pathogenic microbiota in the peri‐implant environment of smokers, affected or not by inflammatory disease.…”
