Period–Luminosity Relations in the Local Group of Galaxies
Igor Soszyński
Abstract:Local Group galaxies, particularly the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, have historically played and continue to play a unique role in studies of the period–luminosity (PL), period–luminosity–color (PLC), and period–Wesenheit (PW) relations, not just for pulsating stars. In recent years, significant efforts have been devoted to calibrate the PL, PLC, and PW relationships at different wavelengths, including studies of the influence of metallicity and nonlinearities on the accuracy of measured distances. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
