This method has previously been used to track infection rates in communities, notably for diseases such as typhoid fever (Moore, 1951 ) and polio (Asghar et al, 2014 ; Chen, 2020 ; Trask & Paul, 1942 ). Wastewater surveillance has been shown to be an effective tool for tracking COVID-19 by providing an early warning of new or emerging cases that complements clinical testing efforts (Zhu et al, 2021 ), as well as monitoring current trends.…”
