Periodontal conditions in orthodontic patients using direct and indirect bracket bonding techniques: A randomized study

Abstract: The aim of this study was comparing two orthodontic bracket bonding techniques (direct and indirect), with regard to the following variables: plaque index; gingival index, evaluation of gingival crevicular fluid, and white spots on tooth enamel. Seventeen patients were randomly selected (10 men and 7 women) with a mean age of 15.8 years, and these were subjected to comprehensive orthodontic treatment (braces), totaling a sample size of 260 teeth examined. The experimental model used was the split-mouth techniq… Show more

“…Several factors may influence enamel-bracket shear bond strength: the type of adhesive systems used for bonding brackets, the type and duration of enamel etching, the size and type of brackets, the design of bracket base and oral environmental factors. These factors and the type of debonding procedure affect the type of bond failure between teeth and brackets as well as the amount of remaining adhesive on both [3][4][5][6].…”

“…Later, the use of transparent trays (Read and O' Brien 1990) allowed the application of light-cured adhesive resins and the visual confirmation of ideal tray placement and bracket positions. This visibility also allowed the orthodontist to clean off excess composite around the brackets and apply light cure when fully satisfied with bracket position and hygiene, promoting less plaque accumulation during treatment (Kalange 2004;Zanini 2016;Aggarwal and Aggarwal 2018). Additionally, the various advantages of indirect technique have remained, especially the better visualization of teeth in the model than in patient's mouth, offering greater precision in bracket positioning (Guenthner and Larson 2007;Agarwal and Kulshrestha 2017;Singh et al 2019) and improving ability to bond posterior teeth (Aggarwal and Aggarwal 2018;Kalra et al 2018).…”
