Periods of Weed Interference on Orange Tree Crops

Abstract: Current orange tree cultivation practices in the Brazilian State of Amazonas present several production problems, being the inadequate weed management the most important one, and significantly affecting fruit productivity. However, if weeds are managed properly, their coexistence with orange cultivars does not affect the fruit yield of orange trees. Thus, the objective of this research was to identify the period of longer weed interference in orange production. The treatments were conducted during the 2013 and… Show more

“…Characteristics such as the number of fruits per plant (NFP) and yield per plant (YPP) were positively correlated with total fruit yield (Y) (Gonçalves et al, 2018). However, the annual reduction in NFP and TFY favored an increase in fruit mass (FM) and longitudinal fruit diameter (LFD), which was significantly higher in 2012 (Table 1).…”

“…In recent surveys on critical period of weed interference in orange tree and guarana crops conducted in Amazonas State, there was a loss of productivity compared to control of 34% for orange (Gonçalves et al, 2018) and 65% for guarana (Soares et al, 2019).…”

“…The Brazilian citrus production represents one of the most important agribusiness production chains in the country, as besides being profitable, it generates jobs, increases capital circulation, and favors regional development (Zulian et al, 2013). However, one of the critical and relevant points in the production process is the negative interference exerted by weeds in the crop (Gonçalves et al, 2018). Weeds can compete with citrus plants, including orange trees, for water, light, and nutrients, and when one of these factors is limiting to the plants, there is less vegetative development, lower yield and production of low-quality fruit (Bortolazzo, 2002;Carvalho et al, 2015).…”
