Perioperative changes in platelet count and function in patients undergoing cardiac surgery

Abstract: Background: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at increased risk of bleeding due to multifactorial coagulopathies. In the present study, we aimed at investigating the changes in platelet count and function during and after surgery as well as determining the association of the platelet dysfunction with bleeding and transfusion requirements in these patients. Methods: A total of 40 adult patients scheduled for elective valve coronary cardiac surgery were included in this prospective observational study. Ch… Show more

“…Platelet count directly affects platelet function. However, platelet function and platelet count are not necessarily in sync [57] in critical care patients due to different causes and stages and concomitant antiplatelet therapy in some patients [58,59]. Certain herbals or foods may inhibit platelet function, such as ginkgo, garlic, ginger, angelica, feverfew, ginseng, hawthorn, turmeric, and rographis, and dogwood [60].…”

“…Cardiac surgery with CPB is often associated with low platelet counts and platelet dysfunction 21 22. Platelets have been extensively studied for their crucial functions in maintaining vascular integrity to prevent spontaneous haemorrhage and for primary haemostasis, which involves the cessation of bleeding upon vascular injury 23.…”

“…These results suggest that MCF EXTEM was associated with MCE platelet rather than the fibrinogen level in the PEX group. Previous study reported that platelet aggregation was significantly impaired during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) [ 25 28 ]. They supposed that direct contact of platelets with CPB circuit induces some changes in the expression of molecules involved in adhesion and aggregation or signaling pathway.…”
