Abstract:The passage of viable indigenous bacteria and/or constituents of their cell wall, i.e. endotoxins, from the gastrointestinal tract to extraintestinal organs, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis, the multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome and death.
