Peripheral adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: report of a rare case

Abstract: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is a benign odontogenic tumor with slow growth potential and exceptionally low recurrence rate. The tumor is predominantly found in females in the second decade of life, involving the maxilla more frequently than the mandible. The tumor presents in three variants-intrafollicular, extrafollicular, and peripheral. The peripheral variant is very rare and only few reports have been published. We present a rare case of peripheral adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in a 10-year-old male chil… Show more

“…A rare case demonstrating a central and peripheral involvement was published by Takeda and Kudo . More recent cases of this variant have been reported by Kumar et al , Balwani et al , Gouvea et al , Panjwani et al , Ide et al and Devarakonda et al . The ‘peripheral, gingival PAOT variant’ seems to follow the biological trend of the ‘intraosseous variant’ .…”

“…A recent literature survey disclosed that the number of published PAOT cases is 27 at present [Philipsen et al and data from eight further reports ]. The number of reported PAOTs is, however, still too restricted to clarify the true biological profile of this variant.…”

“…Of all the cases evaluated, only 35.7% affected mandible. 13,[15][16][17]21,30,34,35,[43][44][45]48,49,52,53 One of these cases presented the peripheral variant of the lesion de peripheral type, 53 and another was associated with a deciduous teeth. 49 The structure of the cyst, its insertion around the whole tooth, not only in the amelocemental junction of an unerupted element, and the size of the buccal cortical expansion were not so typical of a dentigerous cyst.…”
